Safeguarding4Sport is committed to providing evidence-based services that equip organizations and sport leaders to confidently prevent and address maltreatment in sport as well as foster an optimal Safeguarding Sport culture.

Reasons to consider a safeguarding approach

Why Safeguarding?

Scientific Evidence: Extensive research highlights the prevalence of maltreatment in sport and the negative implications of such experiences. Additionally, there is a plethora of research acknowledging the widespread benefits of establishing a positive sport culture.

Reputation: Cases of maltreatment can threaten the integrity of an institution and all those associated.

Why Safeguarding?

Media: Increasing media coverage regarding the prevalence of maltreatment has led to public scrutiny of how institutions govern sport and protect those involved.

Recognition: Several institutions have acknowledged the presence and detrimental effects of maltreatment and have implemented measures to protect preserve the dignity and well-being of all.

Why Safeguarding?

Duty of Care: You have a legal obligation to take reasonable care not to cause harm to others.

Performance: Establishing an optimal sport environment, may enhance participants’ sense of self, commitment, and overall performance in and around sport

Human Rights: Everyone has the fundamental right to experience safe, inclusive, fun, equitable, and accessible sport

About

Dr. Joseph Gurgis

Education

Dr. Gurgis holds a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education with Honours, a Master of Science in Exercise Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Exercise Sciences, all from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto.

Research

Dr. Gurgis’ doctoral research explored Canadian stakeholders’ interpretations, experiences, and recommendations for advancing Safe Sport. The findings of his research suggest the Safe Sport movement should shift its focus to prioritize integrating measures that advance respectful, inclusive, and equitable sport experiences to effectively safeguard the rights of all participants in sport. Beyond his work on Safe Sport, Dr. Gurgis has conducted extensive research around coach development, including topics such as autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching practices, coaching certification, and Indigenous coaching. 

Evaluation

Throughout his doctoral exams, Dr. Gurgis specialized in programme design, implementation, and evaluation. Through this, he has acquired the knowledge and skills to conduct various formative and summative evaluations using multiple methods. Since specializing, Dr. Gurgis has conducted evaluations on several sport-related topics for national and international organizations, including the Coaching Association of Canada, the Coaches Association of Ontario, Alpine Canada Alpin, and the International Council for Coaching Excellence.

  • Former Programme Specialist for Jays Care Foundation (designed and led baseball for development programmes for young offenders across Canada)
  • Former high-performance baseball player (fifteen years, including two years with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues)
  • NCCP trained baseball coach, with over 10 years of coaching experience
  • Sport Psychology Consultant with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Curling Teams
